Obituary for Richard Hutchinson Willis

October 2, 1932 - June 26, 2021
Cambridge, Massachusetts | Age 88

Beloved Brother, Uncle and Friend

Richard H. Willis, longtime resident of Cambridge, passed away on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln at age 88.

Dick was born to the late Richard S. and Velma (Hutchinson) Willis on October 2nd, 1932. Raised in Newton Centre, he attended Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, graduating in 1951. He graduated from Princeton University with a BA in History and German in 1955. Dick honorably served in the United States Army as Specialist Third Class until July of 1958. After the Army, he embarked on a long and successful career in finance and private banking in Boston.

Dick lived his long life to the fullest. He had a lively social life and was an avid traveler and athlete, particularly enjoying marathon running, downhill skiing, cycling, and tennis. He was a lifetime member of The Country Club in Brookline. He climbed all of New England's 4000-footers, and took long walks daily along the Charles River. Always, but especially after retirement, Dick gave back. He was a benefactor of many local philanthropic organizations dedicated to the arts, historic preservation, and education.

In addition to his parents, Dick was predeceased by his brother in law, Brian W. Pendleton. He is survived by his sister Nancy Willis Pendleton of Peterborough, NH; his nieces and nephews Susan Pendleton (Tim Gill) of Maplewood, NJ; Brian W. (Skip) Pendleton (Linda) of Canaan, NH; Sally Pendleton (Carl Werowinski) of Acton, MA; and Richard M. Pendleton (Sage Wheeler) of Peterborough, NH; and several great nieces and nephews, plus his many dear friends.

A private family service will be held in the Bigelow Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery in July. Dick will be laid to rest beside his parents at Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain.
