Obituary

Norton Thomas Pierce age 93 of Concord passed away peacefully on Friday, June 10, 2016 at Miriam Boyd Parlin Residence in Wayland. He was the husband of the late Alice (Davis) Pierce who died in 2005.

Born on August 10, 1922 he was the son of the late Rev. Roderic and Margaret (Hall) Pierce. Raised in Baldwinsville, NY, he graduated from Baldwinsville Academy and later attended MIT, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country during WWII. Upon his return home he became an active member of Trinity Church Boston, where he met his future wife, Alice Davis.

He was involved in the early days of Polaroid, and later helped to develop a measuring device, Metritape, which was produced for years by a small company in West Concord. He then spent the remainder of his career at MIT, working on the engineering of an experimental fusion reactor.

He enjoyed spending time with his family at his beloved cottage in Mashpee, MA, sailing in Popponesset Bay. He also was a member of a chess club for community volunteers with prisoners, and for years delivered meals on wheels. He was an active member of Trinity Church Concord, from his arrival in town in 1954 until several years ago, when he could no longer participate due to illness.

Surviving family members include his children, Jeff Pierce and his wife Debbie Slade of Arlington, Betsy Roberts and her husband Doug of Concord, Emily Verplanck and her husband Philip of Boulder, CO and Steve Pierce and his wife Anne Minnich of Corvallis, OR, and six grandchildren, Andy Roberts and his wife Christina, Luke Roberts, Ben Roberts and his wife Diana, Scott Verplanck and wife Erika, Sam Verplanck and Meg Verplanck and 2 great-grandchildren, Tabitha and Sabine.
