Obituary for Mrs. Gladys R. Catterton

April 22, 1926 - May 16, 2016
North Andover, Massachusetts | Age 90

Beloved Mother and Cherished Grandmother

Gladys Ruth Catterton, 90, died peacefully on May 16th, 2016 of natural causes. For 56 years, she was the beloved wife of David Earl Catterton. Born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1926, to Abraham and Hattie Rosoff, she was predeceased by her beloved brother, Chester.

A force of nature, Glady spent her enormous energy and talents giving to others, using her keen intelligence to find solutions to challenging problems. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1946. Growing up during the Great Depression shaped Glady's social awareness, leading her to the NY School of Social Work and later a position as a social worker at the Goddard Riverside Neighborhood Center in NYC.

While in NY, Glady met her husband David, and after enjoying several years in Greenwich Village, the couple moved to Greenwich, Connecticut to raise their family. With a strong, optimistic spirit, Glady helped improve conditions within each community in which she lived, and inspired the people around her to do the same. Glady served for 17 years on the Board of Directors of the Greenwich YWCA, creating new programs in nutrition and high school student career mentorship. Most recently, she delighted in playing pivotal roles in various aspects of life at Edgewood.

She was engaged and curious about the world. She and David travelled extensively, forming lifelong friendships in several countries. Her two grandsons were her delight, and she took great joy in attending and celebrating their college graduations and imagining their bright futures.

Gladys is survived by her loving children, Amy Janovsky and her husband Joel, of Andover, MA; Robert Catterton and his wife Gwynn O'Gara of Sebastopol, CA; her daughter-in-law Lois Wasoff of Concord, MA; and two grandsons, David Janovsky and Chris Catterton. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Jim Catterton of Concord, MA, in 2013. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 22, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in the Club House at Edgewood Retirement Community, 575 Osgood St., North Andover. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hattie Goldman Rosoff '21, Abraham Rosoff, Gladys Rosoff Catterton, and Jim Catterton '74 Scholarship, Connecticut College Office of Advancement, 270 Mohegan Avenue, New London, CT 06320.
